PROBLEM STATEMENT

Through the AASToday project, the organization seeks to address two problems. The first is how to direct teens on a positive life course that will ultimately benefit the community? Young adulthood is a crucial time. For too many youth, if there is no positive influence to guide them in making the right choices, they will pick the wrong one, putting them on a track that leads to, at best, stagnation and wasted talent and, at worst, drugs and ultimate failure in life. The teen years are also a time of great energy. AASuccess takes this crossroads time of energy and uncertainty and refocuses it on the community. Students learn success and failure through real life projects that have real-world impact. The result? The community benefits and the students learn the kind of satisfaction that can only come from giving back.

The second problem is how to best address the struggle of the migrant population to gain a footing in their new country? Much of this problem stems from language barriers. According to a census taken by the Fairfax County government of Virginia, Asians comprise nearly 20% of the Fairfax county population. Recent data shows that the Vietnamese community makes up 15.4 % of the entire population. A Washington Post article in 2011 stated that only New Orleans has a higher percentage of Vietnamese.[7] These facts led to the following observation, made by the Fairfax County government of Virginia, “[this] diverse population for which English is a second language could impede the ability of residents to be economically successful and socially integrated within the county… Non-budgeted associated costs for mandated language interpretation and translation services have continued to increase across the system, both in contracted and agency delivered services.”

New classes are available on a quarterly basic. Time and dates of provided courses are determined and provided by the Management Team. Students will look through the catalogue of course offerings and discuss their interests with designated mentors, so the mentors can help them coordinate enrollment and participation.

All training and development courses are offered for free to students from low-income families, and at a cost for other stduents. The annual tuition is $2,000 to cover student’s lunch, basic operational and administrative expenses, and is fully tax deductible.

VALUES

  • Balancing multiple cultures and languages: Many students often struggle with English and bridging the cross-cultural divide. They need confidence, in addition to both hard and soft skills, to use their voices effectively in the community and at home.
  • Offering resources: Many students don’t have connections and resources to establish themselves in the business community.

  • Providing skills for meaningful employment: Since 2007, LSA programs have grown to include life skills development, job training, as well as internship and other professional opportunities for both high school and college students.
  • Maximizing supports: AASuccess’ strategies revolve around integrating its students into an inter-generational support community comprised of senior citizens, business owners, working professionals, public officials, non-profit organizations, and representatives from the education community.
  • Perfecting the Act of Giving back: Everyone involved in AASuccess operates and succeeds pursuant to the circle of giving of one’s self to a community effort and in return being helped themselves by the AASuccess community.

SUCCESS STORIES

Byron Cheon

When I joined AASuccess in 2007, I had no idea that I was inadvertently stepping into a journey that would influence nearly every aspect of my professional and personal development. The extensive and personalized life skills coaching I received was especially impactful in not only helping me define my goals and world view, but also in guiding me through every step of the way.

It's more than just a big brother, big sister program, and it's certainly not a career center. AASuccess teaches students the things I didn't learn growing up, and it also encourages the students AND the mentors to explore different possibilities. It's about problem solving and progress. It's not just a one time transaction, but an ongoing transformation that requires a lot of patience and care from both ends. The students we work with are often still very young, so sometimes they don't have a good foundation or don't know what they want. But I think that's the beauty of it - to explore, to create, and to try.

Since 2006, ASuccess has consistenly provided me with the tools and direction to follow my dream of making a difference through health & fitness coaching without compromising on my core values.
Five years from now, I see the business aspect of giving back to AASuccess. I see my business growing and I see it giving back to AASuccess monetarily. Hopefully, I am able to give back in some way. Whether it be through health seminars, fitness classes, or something like that.

I wanted to let you know that after reflecting on my time at AASuccess, I have become a completely different person. I realize that without AASuccess, I wouldn't be as driven or as self-aware as I am today. Today, I am a part of many organizations and on the executive board for two of them. I happily and strongly lead conversations toward bettering both organizations because I found that I was passionate for what I was doing. AASuccess honestly pulled out the leader in me.
